Biography

Richard Davidson (sic) was baptised on 1 Jan 1800 at St Mary the Virgin, Chatham, Kent. He was the son of John Davison and his wife Mary,[1] and their third child of that name.

Occupation

In 1814, when he was said to be "aged 16 years or thereabouts", Richard was bound for seven years to Samuel Nicholson, shipwright, as his apprentice "in the art of shipwright and caulker".[2] He was the first of three family members to be apprenticed to Nicholson, the others being his younger brother Joseph and their eldest nephew Alfred.

Samuel Nicholson's shipyard was close to the boundary between Chatham and Rochester, and can be seen towards the top left of this plan, where the word slip marks the slipway. This map shows the wider area, with the shipyard close to the bottom of the U of the Medway.

Once he had completed his apprenticeship, since Samuel Nicholson was a Freeman of the City of Rochester, Richard was also entitled to apply to become a Freeman. He was admitted on 21 March 1823 by Edward Boys, then Mayor of Rochester.[3]

Marriage

On 31 Oct 1824, Richard Davison married Caroline Enfield at St Mary Magdalene, Gillingham, Kent. Both were said to be single, and living in the parish, and both signed their names. Their witnesses were Sarah Davison, who is thought to have been Richard's aunt and did not sign, and John Davison, probably his father, who did.[4][5]

Richard and Caroline Davison had a total of eleven children together, of whom six survived to adulthood:

Death

Richard Davison, shipwright, died on 27 Feb 1847 at Dodds Place, Rotherhithe. His death was registered the same day by his eldest daughter Lucy Ann Davison, and the cause was given as "chronic bronchitis; enlarged heart, many years".[6][7] He was buried on 7 March 1847 at St Mary Rotherhithe, with the parish register describing him as a barge builder, of Dodd's Place.[8]
