Hello Azure. thanks for checking on me. It is rather slow going--the new member how-to is itself as dense as our genealogies! but I am adding profiles slowly but surely. I do have a question about DNA relationships: one of my peeps showed up as DNA-related to me and a couple of other people on Wikitree. His mother, similarly. When I clicked "show relationship" she was identified as my 5th great grandmother. My question is: is she truly my 5th gg, or is she just named that because someone else has put her in as the mother of my 4th gg? I know from working on this in years past that there was no evidence at the time that could confirm who the real mother of the 4gg actually was; there were two candidates. But I can assume that it IS true that the 5th gg and I are linked by blood? (sorry, I guess that was two questions). Thanks for your help. Ann L

Hi Ann,

Have you checked the sources for the relationship between your 4gg and the 5gg? The relation who also shows as taking a DNA test, are they at the same testing company you are? Alternately, are they on GEDMatch?

I would suggest adding in the children of the 5gg and seeing if they match with your 4gg siblings. If their descendants are added, perhaps there is someone there who has also taken a test that you can confirm the relationship with triangulation.

Does this make sense? Let me know if you have further questions!

Hi,

I see that you have had your DNA tested, congratulations! Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

To be able to add names you will need to volunteer, you can do this from your Navigation page. Just add tags showing your genealogical interests e.g. surnames you are researching, in the comments box by them add the location/relationship to you, then click on the green box that says "Save tags and volunteer." We will then be able to confirm you as a member.

Volunteering just means you will work on your ancestors to help us achieve our goal of joining all individual family trees into one global family tree.

I hope this helps! If you have any problems, let me know.

Take care

Hi Ann, I noticed in your comment to John you are new to genealogy and research and I hope this helps.

We were all novices at some point. Take a look at Getting Started With Genealogy for some great tips on recording your family history.

Thank you, John. I am so new to genealogy research websites that just bumbling through is what describes my methods at this point. I joined wikitree because I was trying to see if there was any definitive information on an *ancestress* that some researchers state was a daughter of some pretty serious English nobility. Which I doubt, and which also turns out so far to be unproven...I am sure I will get better at this after reading some tutorials and how-to's for the various sites. I appreciate your greeting!

Hi Ann, John is off duty at the moment.

If you will use the reply link at the bottom of a comment then the Greeter will see it!

The other option is to Click here to go to your Home Page to finish adding tags, tag comments and volunteering by clicking the add tags and volunteer button at the bottom of the page.

Information on Tags can be found at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tags

You can only work on your profile until you add tags, volunteer and are confirmed a Member.
