Biography

Susan was born in Wichita , Kansas. Thanks to her Grandmother, she is an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation (formerly Citizen Band Potawatomi) in Shawnee, Oklahoma. In February 1958, her father was transferred from Wichita to Seattle, Washington. It was there she met and married Eric; they have 3 children.

While attending Mercer Island United Methodist Church, she was trained in publishing church newsletters and became the editor of the church newsletter, a position she held for several years. In 1985 she returned to school, enrolling at Seattle Pacific University where she graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology/Biblical Studies. In September 1987 she became the Associate Pastor of Columbia Baptist Church, serving a small congregation until June 1992. In September 1992 she was hired as the Regional Representative of the Citizen Band Potawatomi Tribe, representing the states of Washington, Alaska, Hawaii and northern Idaho. She also represented her tribe at Minnetrista Council of Native American Studies in Muncie, Indiana, and later at the Museums At Prophetstown in Lafayette, Indiana. She traveled extensively for the tribe, attending meetings and conferences in Indiana and Michigan. It was during this time that her Father gave her the name "ShaNote" after her 3rd great grandmother; it means "Wind From the South." She resigned in 1997 when Eric took early retirement and they spent 6 months in a camper traveling the United States and Canada. In 1999 they packed up their Seattle house and moved to Kalaheo, Hawai'i, where they now live.

Susan is a writer and an avid researcher of history, primarily Potawatomi. She began her genealogy research in the mid-1970s and continues to this day. Her research has taken her to Canada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma. Early research was done in person at museums, historical societies, cemeteries, libraries and tribal offices. She now checks resources online, though as recently as 2018 she was in Wisconsin celebrating her 5th ggranduncle's connections in Portage.
