William was born on Kauai in 1899 to German-Hawaiian parents. He was the head beachboy at Waikiki's Royal Hawaiian Hotel for 50 years. He played the Star Spangled Banner on his ukelele at the Royal Hawaiian when it opened in 1927. He was also an entertainer, musician and composer. His friends included millionaires and celebrities - Gregory Peck, Jane Russell, Alan Ladd, Red Skelton and Arthur Godfrey. His death in 1982 marked the end of the beachboy era.
