Mary Daniels was born 6 September 1868 in Wayne County, West Virginia the daughter of Harrison Daniels and Hester Johnson. She was probably named for her grandmother, Mary, (also known as Marah) Johnson. [1][2] The copy of Mary's birth record at the courthouse has her parents as Harrison Daniels and Martha Daniels. This is an error. Mary's mother was Hester Johnson and her grandmother was Martha Daniels. [1] Since Harrison was the person who gave the birth information, although supposition, it seems a possible scenario for the mistake was Harrison and his mother Martha provided the birth info and the recording clerk simply asked their names and entered them in the birth register.
Mary was 2 years old in 1870 and resided with her parents at Ceredo, Wayne County, West Virginia.[3]
Tragically Mary died in September 1872 at the age of three from scrofula, a form of tuberculosis affecting the lymph nodes, especially of the neck, that is most common in children and is usually spread by unpasteurized milk from infected cows. The death record lists her parents as H. and H. Daniels.[4]
