Biography

[Note: Mary Parrish who died at Groton, Massachusetts on October 8, 1674, is not this Mary (Danforth) Parrish. see GM: V5:MP: p. 359]

[Note: This couple did not have a son Robert. see GM: V5:MP: p. 359]

Mary (Danforth) Parrish immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Mary Danforth was baptized on May 3, 1621 at Framlingham, Suffolk, England, daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Barber) Danforth. [1]

She married by 1637, Thomas Parrish. [1] He was baptized at Nayland, Suffolk, England on April 26, 1614, son of Thomas Parish. [2]

In Thomas Parrish's father Thomas the elder's will, written December 24, 1652, he left a large portion of his estate to his son Thomas, which after his son's decease should go to his son Thomas. Should grandson Thomas die without heirs, the estate was to pass to his sisters, Thomas the elders grand daughters Mary and Elizabeth Parrish, daughters of his son Thomas. [2]

Evidently Thomas returned to England, and it is undetermined which of his family members accompanied him. In March 1654, Thomas Danforth of Cambridge, attorney for Thomas Parish of Nayland, in Old England, sold the homestead property, orchards, fields, woodlot, common rights etc. in Cambridge of Thomas and Mary Parish to Thomas Oakes. [2]

In March, 1657, Thomas Danforth acting again as attorney, sold 100 acres of land belonging to Thomas Parish of Nayland, to James and Thomas Jr. Prentice. [2]

Children

  1. Mary born at Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 3, 1638 [3]; may have returned to England with her father. [2]
  2. Thomas born at Cambridge on July 21, 1641 [3]; graduated from Harvard College in 1659; no further record, may have returned to England. [2]
  3. Elizabeth born c 1644, named in her grandfather's will. [2]

There is a lengthy article of William Gifford of Sandwich, Mass in NEHGR: Vol. 128: p. 241 (children on p. 250) but doesn't identify the name of his first wife.

His profile on WikiTree = https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gifford-99, names his first wife as Elizabeth Grant, but that doesn't seem to be confirmed by any source, and the marriage is just noted as before 1683, the year he married second wife Mary Mills ?
