Joseph was an English violinist and viola player. He introduced the first public concerts of chamber music in England.
Joseph was a member of the Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain
Joseph was the son of John and Elizabeth Dando. He was born in May 1806 but was not baptised until 30 July 1830. [1] His baptism took place at Camberwell. According to later censuses, he was born in St Pancras, Middlesex, England.
At an early age he commenced the study of the violin under his uncle, Signor Gaetano Brandi. In 1819 he became a pupil of Nicolas Mori, with whom he continued about seven years.[2]
He married Louisa Hayward on 31 December 1831 in St George, Hanover Square, Westminster, England.[3] Their children included:
Louisa Mary (1834)
Joseph Cawthorn (1836)
Mary Ann (1838)
Cordelia Matilda (1845)
He joined the Philharmonic Orchestra in 1831, the same years as his marriage to Louisa, and played with them until 1855. He also established a noted string quartet which gave the first English performances of Haydn's The Seven Last Words (in 1843), Mendelssohn's String Quartet Op. 44 No. 3 and Schumann's String Quartet in A minor.[4]
Joseph became a member of the The Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain on the 1 October 1837 as confirmed in the Society's book, “Members of The Royal Society of Musicians 1738-1984” on Page 44

Mary Kaye (1869)
Joseph Willis (1870)
Charles (1872)
From about 1875, Joseph gave up public performances and became the music master at Charterhouse School at Godalming, Surrey. [8] It is likely that during his time at Charterhouse he tutored Ralph Vaughan Williams.
Joseph died on 9 May 1894 at Godalming, Surrey and his estate passed probate on 6 June 1894 in London, England.[9]
