He inherited the property of his paternal uncle, Robert Dalton (dsp 1578; will 12 Sep 1578, bur. Cockerham church).[3]
Origins
Robert submitted his pedigree on 16 September 1664. It's printed in Vis. of Lancs., 1664/5.[1][2]
Robert's father was a colonel of a regiment of horse in the army of Charles I.[1] His maternal grandfather was a younger son of George Middleton, esq. of Leighton, co. Lancs.[1]
Robert's first wife was Elizabeth Horner. She was the daughter of Thomas Horner of Brathwayt,[1] & Middleham, co. York.[4]
children
Robert and Elizabeth left two daughters and coheirs:[2]
Elizabeth (b. c. 1658, age 6 on 16 Sep 1664),[1] the elder, married William Hoghton of Park Hall in Charnock, and had Thurnham, Bulk and other estates;[2]
Dorothy (b. aft. 16 Sep 1664), the younger, married Edward Riddell of Swinburne Castle, Northumb., and received Caton and a moiety of Aldcliffe.[2][5]
Biddulph
"Biddulph of Biddulph," construction in Vis. of Staffs., (n.d.).[6]
Robert's second wife was Mary Biddulph, eldest dau. of:[6]
Francis Biddulph of Biddulph, co. Staffs. (b. 07 Apr 1619), son of John Biddulph (d. 1642 Coventry) & Mary, dau. of Thomas Eyre, esq. of Hassop, co. Derby.[6]
and Margaret, dau. of George Preston, esq. of Holker, co. Lancs.[6]
Mary was previously married to George Compton, esq. of Brambletye, co. Sussex (dsp).[6]
m.2 (1679) Mary, sis. of Thomas Biddulph of Biddulph; wid. of George Compton, esq. of Brambletye, co. Sussex.[6][4]
Selby
m.3 (Feb 1688) Elizabeth, d. & co. of Sir George Selby, Bart. & Dame Mary Mostyn.[4]
Death
He was survived by his third wife, Elizabeth Selby. She remarried to Richard Massey of Rixton.[4]
Notes
It's not clear if dau. Dorothy's mother was Elizabeth Horner. She's not in 1664 pedigree, but Farrer & Brownbill (1914), seem to imply that she was Horner's daughter. More research needed ...
Vis. of Lancs., 1664, states that his paternal grandmother was Eleanor, dau. of William Hilton of Hilton, co. Lancs.[1] ... but in Lancs? ... might be partially right since George Middleton of Leighton, co. Lancs., Middleton-4052 m. Margaret, dau. of Christopher Metcalf & neice of Margaret Metcalfe, wife of Wiliiam Hilton of Biddick, who was de jure Baron Hilton from 1559-62.
only thing ... Hilton of Hilton & Hulton (Hilton) of Lancs. were not related in the time of Wm. of Biddick ... but they did meet each other later. Plus... Transactions, 42, states that paternal grandmother was Elizabeth, dau. of William Hulton of Hulton, co. Lancs.[3]
