Biography

Robert Dack was born sometime around 1829, in Hevingham, Norfolk, England. His parents were Edward Dack[1] and Elizabeth (Wilkins) Dack[2]. (see research note)

On the 1841 census, a ten year old Robert Dack lived with his widowed mother Elizabeth, brother Luke, aged 7, by Brick Kiln Road, Hevingham. Also with them was a 70 year old widow, Elizabeth Blackbon. (Blackburn?) All were born in Norfolk.[2]

In 1851, Robert (aged 23) lived with his brother John Dack, his wife Elizabeth and their three children.[3]

He then enlisted in the Army, serving in Crimea in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Regiment of Foot, Regimental No. 1728, between 1854-1855.[4] He was wounded in action in June 1855.[5] His obituary confirms that he enlisted in 1854 and was sent to Malta before reaching Crimea. It also states that he received the Queen Victoria Crimean Medal with four clasps for the battles of Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman and Sebastopol, and at the latter he fell victim to cholera and was invalided to hospital.[6]

He married Sarah Bacon on the 17th October 1858 at St Mary's church, Hevingham. Robert gave his age as 30 years and his father as Edward Dack, labourer.[1]

On the 1861 census, Robert (aged 32) and Sarah lived at Buxton Heath, Hevingham with their eldest son William.[7]

By 1871, Robert and Sarah were living at Whitworth Colliery, Durham, where Robert was a Colliery Horsekeeper. They had five children, the youngest two having been born since their move to Durham.[8]

On the 1881 census, Robert and Sarah lived at Binchester Terrace, Old Park, Durham, with six children.[9]

The 1891 census records Robert and Sarah at Binchester Huts, Coundon, Durham, with their youngest son Edward, aged 11.[10]

In 1901, Robert and Sarah were living at 18 Close House, Coundon Grange, Durham. (the transcript shows his age as 42, but the original gives his age as 72) They are living with their daughter and son in law, Thomas & Sarah Walker, and their grandson John.[11]

The 1911 census records Robert and Sarah at 44 Close House, Coundon Gate, Durham. They had been married for 53 years and five of their seven children were still living.[12]

He died on 4th December 1913 at John Street, Eldon Lane, Durham, aged 86 years[13] and was buried at St Mark's Churchyard, Eldon Lane on 7th December 1913.[14]

His obituary states that Robert Dack was "a prominent member of the Society of Friends" and that "a large number of friends and general public followed the cortege to the Friends' Meeting House, where the Friends' service of burial were gone through".[15]
