James was an American author and farmer from South Carolina known for his writings on religion and Southern culture.
He was the son of Eugene Whitfield and Alice Maude McBride Dabbs of Rip Rap Plantation. He served in the Great War as a 1st Lieutenant, Field Artillery in France. He was the husband of Jessie Armstrong Dabbs, with whom he had two daughters. After she died in 1933, he married Edith Mitchell, with whom he had three more children. Edith was his former student at Coker College from his time as an English professor.
