Biography

Sarah (Custer) Miller has German Roots.

Sarah Custer / Custard, daughter of Issac Custer[1] and Susan Hepon (see the Research Notes for more information concerning her parentage), was born about 1766, probably in Virginia.

Grand-daughter Sarah Custer John was seemingly named for her, thus confirming this profile's Sarah's maiden-name as being Custer, or Custard, as per the marriage record. However, Küster [2] or Kuster (more common in Switzerland) [3] is the original German spelling of Sarah's maiden surname.

Sarah Custard was wed to George Miller in Rockingham County, Virginia, on 1 May 1794,[4] [5] [6] or on 24 May 1794. [7] [8][9] [10] They had several children during their marriage, amongst whom:

  1. Mary (Miller) Parr;
  2. Rachel (Miller) John;
  3. George Miller, Jr.

Sarah Miller shows up in tax assessments for Concord Township, Ross, Ohio from 1826 to 1832.[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]

In the census of 1830, Sarah was enumerated as "Sallye" in Concord Township, Ross, Ohio, United States.[18]

In 1840 she was enumerated with her son, Joseph, in Concord Township, Ross, Ohio, United States.[19]

In 1850 she was enumerated in Concord Township, Ross, Ohio, United States.[20]

Sarah Custer Miller died sometime after the 1850 Census, probably in Ross County, Ohio, where she and her husband had lived from at least 1808 onwards.

Research Notes

Previously Disputed Parents

Previous research notes for Sarah (see the "Changes" tab for those notes) indicated that her parents were uncertain, as there was at the time no evidence cited in the profile to indicate who her parents were. As of 6 March 2023, Leigh Anne (Johnson) Dear (see comment below) reattached parents Issac Custer and Susan Hepon to this profile, based upon Sarah's marriage record found at Rockingham County, Virginia Marriages (see Image). Thus it now seems that there actually is documentary evidence for Issac Custer and Susan Hepon as Sarah's parents.

The record as transcribed in Rockingham County, Virginia Marriages, in the section for women, under the surname Custard:[21]

Sarah & George Miller 24 May 1794; b- Jacob Custard d of Isaac
The key to abbreviations (p. iv) shows that 'b-' is the name of the bondsman, Jacob Custard, (most likely a near kinsman of Sarah's); 'd' stands for daughter, therefore Sarah was 'd[aughter] of Isaac.'

The same bond record is found in Old Tenth Legion Marriages : Marriages in Rockingham County, Virginia, from 1778-1816, Taken from the Marriage Bonds in which the year is given, groom's name, bride's name, bride's father, then bondsman:[22]

94-Miller, Geo. Sarah Sustard[sic] Isaac Jac. Custard (Custer)

According to the Rockingham County, Virginia Marriages source I note below Sarah "Custard" daughter of Isaac married 24 May 1794, Jacob Miller." Marriage bond posted by Jacob Custard, presumably her brother or her 1st cousin. In the parent disputed section of this profile no explanation is given as to why Isaac and his wife were rejected candidates. If it's not objectionable I've gone ahead and attached her to her correct parents. I also adopted orphaned Isaac Custer's profile and will compile the research to make his bio. He's my great...uncle so I don't mind the work. This attachment to her correct parents makes her a direct descendant of Paulus and Gertrude Kuster, early Germantown (Mennonites), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania founders who arrived in 1683.

Hallo Leigh, thank you so much for your research. I myself did not detach Sarah's parents last year. I trusted that the person who did detach them, knew more than i, so i unquestioningly accepted the detachment and the explanation given in the Disputed Parents Section. I looked up the marriage record at the link provided by you, made a photo of it (which photo image i have now uploaded at this profile), and have rewritten the first paragraph of the biography to reflect her known parentage. I can, alas, not guarantee, that noone will detach Sarah's parents once again. Perhaps you would like to rewrite the Disputed Parents Section? Or should we just do away with it altogether?
Thanks for tracking down that source, Leigh Anne! I have removed the old disputed information and updated the bio a little, including inline citations for two different sources for the marriage bond record naming Isaac as Sarah's father.
