Wiley was born in Blount County, Tennessee in 1828 to Benjamin A Cunningham Sr (abt.1797-abt.1849) and Sarah (Kirkpatrick) Cunningham (abt.1797-abt.1845), the sixth child born to the couple who would have 12 children in total.
At the age of 21, in 1849, he married Sarah (Brakebill) Cunningham (1827-1920) in Blount County, and it's believed the marriage actually took place in Maryville, Tennessee. He and Sarah had eight children between the years of 1850 - 1861, all linked to their profiles.
The Civil War years were difficult for this family, compounded by several facts that occurred all too quickly: 1 Apr 1863 Wiley enlisted in the Confederate Army, 3 Regiment Mounted Infantry (Lillards) by a Major Peck. On 10 May 1863 Wiley writes two letters from Vicksburg, Mississippi, "Dear Brothers and Sisters" and "Dear Wife and family"; each describing events, lands, "yankee" encounter at Port Gibson, plus his love and appreciation for God, family and home.
It's believed Wiley was captured at Champion Hill, Mississippi, about 23 miles east of Vicksburg on 17 May 1863, then transported with other POWs up the Mississippi River and marched across Illinois to Indiana where he was held at the Confederate Prisoner of War Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana. Less than two months later, 11 Jul 1863, Wiley was dead, possibly due to starvation and/or disease; the Roster of Prison indicates he died from a lung infection.
Wiley and other POWs were originally interred at Green Lawn Cemetery (Confederate Section), but reinterred in 1933 in a mass grave of 1,616 Confederate POW'S at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indiapolis. May they all rest in peace.
