Richard was a vocalist and actor who was born in Ryde, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England in 1846. His parents were James Cumming and Sarah Bright. [1]
He was living with his parents and siblings in Newchurch, Hampshire in 1851. His father was an inn keeper. [2]
He married Emily Ann Walker in Kent, England in 1867. [3] In 1871 they were living in Kent, where Richard was a schoolmaster. [4][5] They did not appear to have had any children. Richard became a widower when Emily died in 1872, and a year later he remarried Theresa Bactens (or Baetens) in London. [6]
Richard soon gave up teaching to become a singer/actor. He made his debut in 1878, playing The Notary in Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Sorcerer". For the next ten years, he went on to perform in a variety of operas, including "The Pirates of Penzance" and "The Mikado". His wife was also a performer. [7]
In 1891, Richard and Theresa were living in Sussex with their two children, Clara and Richard. [8] Ten years later they were living in London. [9]
It is not yet known when or where he died.
