Martin Culp was born about 1832 in Pennsylvania. His parents at this time, are Unknown. He married Charlotte A Wilson before 1854 possibly in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Charlotte's father, William B Wilson, had died when she was a young child and Charlotte and her sisters were living with their mother Alvira Primrose Smith Wilson in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania in 1850.
Martin and Charlotte had eight children, I have the names of seven of them;
Olivia Mary Culp, possibly Alvira for her mother, b c 1854.
Isabelle Irene Culp b 2 Sep 1856, married Josiah McKissick c 1879 and she died 9 July 1920 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA.
John Wilson Culp b c 1860, probably Monroe County, Ohio
Richard Martin Culp b 31 Mar 1861 and baptized 30 Mar 1863 in Boiling Springs Presbyterian in Armstrong County, PA.
William G Culp b c 1865 Pennsylvania
Harry Howard Culp b c 1866 Pennsylvania
Alberta J Culp b Dec 1875 Pennsylvania
The family moved for a very short while from Pennsylvania to Ohio before the 1860 census. They were back in Armstrong Co, PA bef 29 Mar 1863 when Charlotte Culp was reinstated as a member of the Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church in Kiskiminetas. No mention of husband Martin being reinstated. The next day after her reinstatement, her son Richard was baptized in that church.
Martin enlisted at Pittsburgh on the 6 Aug 1862 as a private in the 155th PA INF and was discharged on 2 June in the field due to end of war.
The 1870 census finds Martin age 38, Charlotte 48 and their children living in Kiskiminetas, PA.
By 1880, the family had moved to Clarion County, PA and were enumerated in Beaver, clarion Co; Martin Culp 49 PA teamster, Charlotte 48, issue Richard, William and Alberta. A neice named Lulu McQuaid age 9 is living with them as well.
The 1900 census of Edenburg, Clarion Co, PA Martin gives his birthdate as June or Jan of 1832, Charlotte A b July 1831 has had 8 children and 5 are living, dau Alberta is living with her parents.
On 22 Aug 1901 per the Clarion Democrat; Martin Culp sold to S R Beck 6.5 acres in Edenburg.
On 22 Aug 1901 per the Clarion Democrat, Martin Culp and dau Alberta left to attend the funeral of Martin's sister in law, Mrs Margaret Leech of Leechburg. [Charlotte died April 11 the same year]
Martin married for the second time to Sophia Whitmore, widow of John Reichard, on 5 Nov 1902 at St Petersburg, Clarion County, PA. They had no children together that I know of.
Because of a mention in the Clarion Democrat on 1 Feb 1906, daughter Isabella Irene McKissick visited her aged father in Edenburg.
On Feb 27 1907, Martin was admitted to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Dayton, Ohio. His pension was $12. He was listed as 5'10", age 75, could read and write, was Protestant in religion, retired Teamster and his military service was 3 years as a private in Co C of the 155th PA INF. He was a resident of Pittsburgh when he enlisted. His disability included loss of teeth, Aortic Stenosis, Cardiac hypertrophy, Arterial Sclerosis. His general condition listed as FAIR.
On 12 April 1911, Martin Culp died and the National Home notified his daughter Mrs J McKissick of Pittsburgh by telegraph and his widow Sophia Culp by mail. She was living in Knox Co, PA. I searched at Find a Grave, but did not find anything about his burial. His second wife, Sophia Culp died in 1920.
There are a few other Martin Culps in the area during the same time period. One, in particular, requires mention. Martin Culp b c 1820 in PA and married to Elizabeth Unknown appears in the same church records as this Martin and Charlotte, the Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church of Kiskiminetas, Armstrong County, PA. It may prove that these two Martins are first cousins, or somehow related but more work is needed. Martin and Elizabeth's children were baptized in Boiling Springs Church. Be careful when adding sources, all these Martin Culps are not the same person.
I am hoping someone who is related to this family [I am not], will add to this profile, particularly the parents of Martin Culp, Kolp, Kolb, b c 1832 or whatever the spelling.
Warning: This is not the Martin Culp b 1832 Armstrong Co, PA, son of William H Culp and Rachel Long, who died 1888 in Derry twp, Westmoreland Co, PA, who married Mary Jane Kinnan.
