Biography

Thomas Cullen, Jr., was probably born before 1663, based on witnessing of the deed discussed below.

He was living in Chowan Precint, Albemarle Province, in the Carolina colony on 15 March 1683/4 when he witnessed a deed made by Joseph Chew and his wife Elizabeth to John Gatlin for land on the west side of Richahock Creek in Chowan Precinct, Albemarle Province, Carolina Colony, on 15 March 1683/4. The same deed indicates that John Gatlin sold his interest in this land to "Tho. Cull of Dover" on 16 March 1683/4.^{[1] [2]}

No further record of him has been identified.

Research Notes

Uncertain Origins

Based on the deed record cited above, some researchers have identified him as a possible son of Thomas Cullen and Sarah Alderstone.^[3][4]

However, Thomas is not listed among the seven children of Thomas Cullen for who headrights were obtained in the land patent obtained on 30 Mar 1680 by Ralph Fletcher, by assignment from Thomas Cullen, for transportation of nine persons (Thomas, wife Sarah, sons Jno. & Rich., daughters Sarah, Anne, Mary, Christian, & Martha) to Carolina Colony.^[5] In his updated profile of the Cullen family published in 2011, John Anderson Brayton removed Thomas from the list of children of Thomas Cullen and Sarah Alderstone.^[6] Based on this, his parents have been marked "uncertain."
