Biography

Margaret S Crowson Burke was born December 15, 1806 in Ashe County, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Elisha Crowson and Susan Smith Crowson When Margaret was born her father, Elisha, was 32 and her mother, Susan was 27.

She married John Washington Burk M.D. on 26 August 1826, in Rockingham, Richmond, North Carolina, United States. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 4 daughters. She lived in Virginia, United States in 1870 and Union Township, Wilkes, North Carolina, United States in 1880.

In 1850 she was enumerated in Grayson, Virginia.^[1] The household included John W Burk 47, Margaret Burk 44, Charles Burk 15, Alexander Burk 12, Susan E Burk 10, and Thomas Burk 7.

In 1860 she was enumerated in Grayson, Virginia.^[2] The household included Jno W Burke 53, Margaret Burke 40, Alexander C Burke 22, Thomas J Burke 17, and Frances A Burke 16.

In 1870 she was enumerated in St. Clair Magisterial District, Smyth, Virginia.^[3] The household included John W Burke 67, Margaret S Burke 70, Thomas E Burke 25, James Littz 25, Frances A Littz 21, Margaret E Littz 5, William Littz 3, Laura Littz 1, and Jetta Littz 0.

In 1880 she was enumerated in Union Township, Wilkes, North Carolina.^[4] The household included Albert Burk 24, and grandmother Margaret Burk 75.

Margaret died on 20 May 1884 and was buried in Saltville, Smyth, Virginia. She was mentioned on a memorial in Rich Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Saltville, Smyth County, Virginia with a death date of 20 May 1884.^[5]

Previous Note:

• Her date of death is shown in many places as 1874, but she's listed in the 1880 census with her grandson Albert, and the gravestone, although broken, appears to say either 1884 or 1894.
