Emeritus Professor Frank (originally Francis) Keble Crowley, who died on 16 October 2013, was an important figure in the Australian historical profession. Like many prominent Australian historians, he was the son of an Anglican clergyman. Born in Middle Brighton in Victoria on 19 December 1924, he grew up in the small South Australian town of Streaky Bay.
He was educated at Streaky Bay State School, Queen’s College in Adelaide, St Peter’s College in Adelaide, Peterborough High School, and the Universities of Melbourne and Oxford. He was one of the earliest graduates to receive a PhD from an Australian university.
