Guy Cross was the third son of Phillip Cross and Martha (Harper) Cross born 24 Mar 1891 in Justin, Denton Co., TX. Phillip “Mann” Cross died 23 Aug 1896. Martha Harper married Thomas Mikeul “Mike” Andes on 6 Oct 1895 before Phillip Cross died indicating that Martha and Phillip likely divorced sometime after Guy was born. Mike Andes moved the family to Indian Territory sometime before the 1900 census was taken 18 Jun 1900.
The 1900 Census for Garvin, Chickasas Nation, Indian Territory, lists Guy Cross (age 9 and b. Mar 1891 in TX) living in the household of Thomas Andes (b. May 1868 in TN). This is probably about the time Guy dropped out of school (when he was in the third grade) to work picking cotton to help support the family.

According to stories that Guy Cross told to his family, he rode horseback about 400 miles from Indian Territory to New Mexico by himself. His mother and other members of her family had already moved to New Mexico to homestead in western Roosevelt County, but Guy stayed behind with his 'Uncle John' Harper to help him take care of his horses. The family sent him instructions on how to get from ranch to ranch on the route. At the age of 14, he set out on a half-broken horse armed with food and a pistol which he used to kill a wolf on the way.
Guy worked on a bridge building crew for the railroad in Carlsbad, Eddy Co., NM in 1909. On 15 Apr 1910, Guy lived at Lykins, Roosevelt Co., NM.
In May 1910 Guy (age 20) was listed as a stepson in the household of Mike T, Andes in Pearson Pct. of Roosevelt Co., NM in the 1910 census.
