Early Life

James was born on February 6, 1916 [1][2][3] in Pensacola, Florida. He was the son of John Crooke and Mary Clow.
In 1920, his father worked as a Longshoreman and his widowed maternal grandfather, Martin (also a longshoreman) lives with the family. His older brother, Martin Crooke, manages a drug store. They rent a house on West Main Street in Pensacola, Florida. [4]
In September of 1929, at the very beginning of the Great Depression, his father passes away in Bay County, Florida.
As the Great Depression deepened in 1930, the family rents a house on N. Alcaniz St in Pensacola, Florida. James, at just 14 years old, operated his own business selling newspapers. His recently married sister, Margaret (Crooke) Gibson, still lives at home (though her husband isn't with them). His older brother, John Crooke Jr, works as a machinist at the dry docks, and his widowed mother takes in boarders (one currently lives with the family. [5]
On February 26, 1935 (at 17 years old), he took a job on the SS Contessa, a refrigerated freighter passenger ship from the New Orleans port. [6]

Marriage and Family

After his marriage, he and Norma lived with his mother Government Street in Pensacola. He worked for M Taranto And Co [10] driving a grocery truck. [11] Norma didn't work, but his sister, Helen Crooke, worked as a research assistant.
In 1944, James joines the Army and serves in World War II.
In 1945, the couple still lived with James' mother on Government Street. James worked as an Army medic. Norma worked as a stenographer.[12] By this time, the couple also had two children.
At the end of World War II, James leaves the military and in 1946, the couple gives birth to another daughter. In 1948, the couple moves to South "G" Street and James works as a carpenter for the Pensacola Naval Air Station (NAS).[13]
In 1953, the couple had their first son.
And by 1954, James is promoted to a supervisory postion.[14]
In 1956, he still works at NAS, but works as a locksmith. [15] and in 1958, he works at NAS as a mechanic. [16]
He eventually retired his civil service from Pensacola NAS. [17]
Their marriage ends when James passes away on July 5, 1980.

Military

On 12 January, 1944, James enlisted as a private the Army at Camp Blanding, Florida.[18] He left the army on December 20, 1945. [19]

Death and Burial

He passed away on July 5, 1980 in Pensacola, Escambia, Florida at 64 years old. He is buried at at Barrancas National Cemetery. [1][2][3]
