Sociologist and historian of African-American studies. She founded the Boston University graduate program in that subject in 1969. Her academic specialty was the history of the Black professional class the Boston area.
She was the first African-American professsor at Hunter College and at her alma mater, Smith College. She then taught at Boston University from 1951 to she retired in 1985.
