Biography

John Crichton, 3rd of Strathurd was the second but eldest surviving son of James Crichton, 2nd of Strathurd and Cairns, presumably with his wife Margaret Sempill.[1]

John Crichton was probably born about 1490 as he was still a minor when his father died before February 1502[1] and wasn't granted sasine of the lands until 1512.

During his minority he was the ward of his uncle Patrick Crichton of Petlundy from 8 September 1502[2] until health issues meant that Patrick Crichton was granted leave to travel abroad on 30 January 1505/6[3] Supposedly another uncle, John Crichton of Blackburn was then granted his wardship[1] but the primary source for this is not cited.

As mentioned he was granted sasine in 1512 to Ragorton (Redgorton), the mill there, and Strathurd[4]

Marriages

His first marriage was to Elizabeth Lyon, before 3 June 1513, when the crown confirmed that lands in Nethir-Blalok and Gourdeishill in the Barony of Ragortoun would be held by both.[5] She was still alive on 31 August 1529, when a document names her as John Crichton's wife[6] but must have died before 2 August 1535 when John is named with his second wife Janet Sinclair.[7]

His second wife, Janet Sinclair was still alive on 30 March 1539.[8]

Children

It's not clear which of his wives was the mother of his children, though it seems likely that at least the eldest three sons and daughter Agnes were the children of his first wife, Elizabeth Lyon.

  • John Crichton, succeeded his father as 4th of Strathurd;
  • James Crichton, named as second son in a document dated 19 November 1535;
  • Robert Crichton, named in the same document as third son;
  • Agnes Crichton, married 1) William Ruthven, 1st of Ballindean; 2) by 15 Dec 1556, Andrew Abercromby (younger son of Thomas Abercromby of that Ilk and Murthly)
  • William Crichton, appointed Parish Clerk of Ochtergaven;
  • Christine Crichton, married John Todd, Burgess of Perth

Death

He died sometime after 30 Mar 1539, when he and Janet Sinclair had a charter Balbrogow Lethame in the barony of Redgorton[9], and before 24 Aug 1542 when his eldest son John Crichton had a gift of his father's movable goods and gear which had belonged to him at the time of his death.[10][11]

Research Notes

The Red Book of Scotland, vol 3 by Gordon MacGregor has several statements; other sources haven't yet been found to confirm these. Namely:

  • John was underage at his father's death and his wardship was first granted to to uncle Patrick Crichton of Petlandy on 8 Sep 1502.[12] It was then gifted to another uncle, John Crichton of Blackburn, and had sasine for the lands of Redgorton and the Mill of Strathurd in 1512.[13]
  • That Elizabeth Lyon, the first wife of John Crichton, 3rd of Strathurd, was the daughter of John Lyon, 4th Lord Glamis.[14] This isn't mentioned in The Scots Peerage.

Also the sasine of 1512 for John Crichton states "Sasine for the lands of Redgorton and the Mill of Strathurd" when the index transcribes it as ...

His son William Crichton is described as Parish Clerk of Ochtergaven (this would be Auchtergaven).
