Based on life events, Joseph was probably born about 1740 and passed away in late 1790. He was a hairdresser by profession and does not mention either wife or children in his will, which was signed in Charleston on 1 February 1781 and proven in Charleston court on 24 January 1791. In his will, he specified that his "Negro Men Slaves named Sam , Ned and Jemmy be free and forever emancipated from all farther Slvery and Service whatsoever...immediately at my decease...." He further specified that his "freed Woman named Jane" was to inherit his man slave Monday, the girl Nancy, and the balance of the estate not specifically granted," and that his freed man James (the cooper) was to have "the sum of ten Guineas." Additional mention is made to his Negro man named Marcus, who was bequeathed to "my well beloved friend Thomas Roper".[1]
