Anthony was born in 1820 in Ireland. He passed away in 1865.
Anthony Craig was one of the “older” men, at 37 years old, to immediately enlist in the army. he is listed as born in Ireland and as a Tailer in Wheeling, West Virginia at the time of his enlistment. He was first mustered into the Infantry and later joined Carlin’s Battery in February 22nd 1864 only to be captured at Mason’s Creek June 21st 1864. He was held prisoner at Andersonville.
After the end of the Civil War, over 1800 prisoners were transported to Vicksburg, Mississippi to take a ship up the Mississippi River to areas up North. Due to lack of proper maintenance, the SS Sultana exploded in Memphis, Tennessee. Most drown and about 400 survived.
Anthony drowned in the Mississippi when the Sultana exploded.[1]
