Charles grew up living with his parents and siblings in George Street, Wombwell.[2][3][4][5] This area of Wombwell was known locally as "the square". It consisted of rows of terrace houses which were demolished in the 1950s when a new council estate was built in the town. This area is now a public car park.
Wombwell is in the heart of the South Yorkshire coal field. Charles, like his father and many other men in the area was a coal miner.
Charles and Mary eventually settled on the outskirts of Wombwell and lived at Wombwell Lane, Stairfoot, Barnsley, Yorkshire.[7] They did not have children. Mary passed away in 1948.[8]
