Edward was born in 1790, second son of Capt. James Henry Cottingham [1762-21 May 1819], and Frances Barnett Woolery Cottingham of Barbados [d. 1810], who were married in 1788.
Edward served in the Peninsular War [1808-1814] with the 28th [North Gloucesters] and 85th regiments. As Lieutenant Cottingham, he was injured at the Battle of Albuera [near Badajoz] on 16 May 1811, where the allies suffered 32% losses. It was the blodiest battle of the war.
He was promoted to Captain, his rank to date from 25 January 1813.
He retired from the army as a Major.
His uniform is on display in the Regimental musuem, together with the Peninsula Gold medal with Albuera ribbon.
His father was a barrister, treasurer of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, to which position Edward succeeded him in 1819. He had inherited Summerville Estate, Co. Cavan, and as captain of the Cavan Cavalry, was present at the Battle of Granard on 5 September 1798. He was awarded the Freedom of the City of Dublin for this success.
His mother was an actress, who had performed in London and Dublin. She was reputed to be an heiress of estates in the West Indies. She died in 1810. After her death, James married Maria Palles, widow of Christopher Palles, grandmother of Christopher Palles
Edward married Frances Hamilton Williams, daughter of Richardson Williams of Clontarf, Dublin. She died 2 July 1889.
He was admitted a Freeman of Dublin at the Christmas Assembly, 1820, by virtue of his birth, he being the son of James Henry Cottingham who had been admitted a Freeman at Michaelmas 1798.
He was appointed Inspector of Prisons in Ireland.
He was elected to membership of the Royal Dublin Society on 2 December 1847.
His daughter Frances Hamilton Cottingham, of 9, Lower Sherrard Street, Dublin, married Robert Henry Grant Tritton, of Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary, a Lieutenant in the Revenue Police, on 14 June 1849, at St. George's Church, Dublin.
His daughter Mary Selina Cottingham [b. 20 May 1843] married Alexander Edward McClintock [d. 1900], son of Rev. Alexander McClintock, on 17 June 1862, at Monkstown.
His sister, Maria Cottingham, married Rev. Sir Hercules Richard Langrishe [3rd Bart.] on 15 November 1817. She died on 5 October 1870.
