Salvatore is born to Giovanni Costa and Biagia Zabbia about 1893 in Corleone, Italy.
He and his brother, Calogero Costa, immigrate to the US on the SS Vincenzo Florio in 1905, arriving at Louisiana on May 5th. They are meeting their father, Giovanni. Salvatore's age is listed as 12. Calogero is 15.[1]
In 1915, he marries Rosalia Gennaro, a native of Corleone and daughter of Bernardo Gennaro and Biagia Nicolosi.[2]They have four children.
In the Times-Picayune, June 12, 1931, it is reported that Sam is sentenced to six months in jail and a 12 months suspended sentence for manufacturing whiskey. Mrs. Rosa Costa, who was jointly charged with her husband, was placed on probation for five years.[3]
After moving to New York, the couple split, and Rosalia returns to Louisiana with the children. She again marries in 1947, this time to Bernardo "Bennie" Nicolosi.[4] Sam never remarries.
Sam dies in bed on December 10, 1951, in Poughkeepsie, NY. The cause of death is heart failure. His death certificate says that he is 58, born approximately 1893, married (spouse unknown), and working as a floor man at a clothing company. His parents are listed as John Costa and Biaggia Zabbia.
