Biography

Jean Baptiste Cormier, son of Pierre "dit Rossignol" Cormier and Marie Anne Cyr, was born about 1730 in Sainte-Anne, Beaubassin, Acadie. [1]

He married Marie Madeleine Bernard before 1759 in Acadie. [1]

Known children of the couple: [1]

  1. Marie Madeleine Cormier b: 17 Jul 1759
  2. Marie Rose Cormier b: 17 Mar 1761
  3. Marie Madeleine Cormier b: 1 Oct 1762
  4. Jean Baptiste Cormier b: 23 Aug 1764
  5. Marie Nathalie (Anastasie) Cormier b: 25 May 1766
  6. Benoni Cormier b: 29 Feb 1768
  7. Firmin Cormier b: 2 Jun 1769
  8. Félix Cormier b: 17 Jul 1771

Jean Cormier, husband of Madeleine Bernard, passed away on 28 Jun 1792 being given the age of around 65 years on the record. His burial was the 30th in Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue parish cemetery of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Bas-Canada.[2]In the presence of known witnesses Joseph Giard, Pierre Cheval and Joseph Allard. The officiating priest was Payet. [3] [1][4]

Research Notes

The following information was in the biography: He died 20 Sep 1771 and was buried 5 Oct 1771 in Miquelon, France.[5]

However, the Jean Cormier who died on or about September 20, 1771 on the Island of Saint Pierre-et-Miquelon was his brother Jean Francois Cormier and his burial record clearly states he is the husband of Marie Cyr. The actual burial record can be found at the following link on page 7 at the bottom of the right hand page. http://anom.archivesnationales.culture.gouv.fr/caomec2/osd.php?territoire=SAINT-PIERRE-ET-MIQUELON&commune=MIQUELON&annee=1771&typeacte=AC_DE

Also, the burial record of Jean-Baptiste Cormier clearly states that he is the husband of Madeleine Bernard.

There is conflicting information in Karen Theriot Reader's website concerning Jean-Baptiste Cormier . Karen Theriot Reader cites the DGFA draft version indicating that Jean-Baptiste "drowned 20 Sep 1771, and the registers for Miquelon have him buried on 5 Oct 1771". She wonders if Jean Cormier who was buried at Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu in Québec on 30 Jun 1792 could be Jean-Baptiste's son. Karen Theriot Reader also gives the date of burial 20 Sep 1771 in Miquelon for Jean François Cormier, son of another couple with the same names Pierre Cormier and Marie Anne Cyr whose parents are unknown. No record was found at that date in the Miquelon register.

"The identification of Jean Cormier, husband of Marie-Madeleine Bernard, as the son of Pierre Cormier dit Rossignol and Marie-Anne Cyr, remains only a possibility. (...) Stephen A. White, genealogist at Centre d'études acadienne, Université de Moncton (correspondence 24 April 2020), painstakingly reviewed the sources available and methodically analyzed the evidence. His conclusion: 'I think we may retain the linkage [of Jean Cormier, husband of Marie-Madeleine Bernard, as son of Pierre Cormier dit Rossignol and Marie-Anne Cyr], attributing it to Father (Clément) Cormier and Mr. (Bona) Arsenault as only an attractive possibility of course, in the hope that someday better evidence might appear.'" I have taken the liberty of changing the data re. death & burial (with sources) but in the Bio, I did not delete "He died 20 Sep 1771 and was buried 5 Oct 1771 in Miquelon, France."

because I do not have access to Source: #DRFT CORMIER #7 e and records for Miquelon; will leave it up to better informed genealogists to review and update.
