Biography

Mary was the daughter of Roger Corbet of Shropshire[1][2] and Elizabeth (Hopton.[3][4] Her birth date is uncertain, but her parents married before 1448.[5][6] She was probably born in Shropshire where her father lived.

Mary married Thomas Thornes[2] (son of Roger Thornes and Cecilia[1]), again probably in Shropshire - both families lived there.[3][4] Her marriage date has been estimated as about 1467 on the basis of her son Roger being born before 1469. They had at least one child:

Mary's death date is not known. She is likely to have died in Shropshire. Her husband was recorded as living in 1482, when he is mentioned in an enfeoffment grant,[7] and died before 1503.[3][4]

This profile was re-reviewed for the Magna Carta Project by Michael Cayley on 10 July 2023.
Mary (Corbet) Thornes appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Nathaniel Littleton to Magna Carta Surety Baron William de Mowbray (vol. III, pages 33-35 LITTLETON). This trail was identified by the Magna Carta Project and reviewed/approved in December 2017. A trail from Littleton to the Bigods (Hugh and Roger) was also completed/approved in December 2017. Other trails from Gateway Litttleton to the Clares (Richard and Gilbert), John de Lacy and Saher de Quincy were previously badged in another trail. Each of these trails are outlined in the Magna Carta Trails section of the Gateway's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".
