Jeptha Bayles B.1844 D. 1920 married Elisa Unknown (ended in divorce)[9]
In the 1841 census Amy (age 40) was in Wilby, Suffolk, England. Her husband was a farmer and she was the mother of 13 children with her 14th on the way. She and her husband had recently lost 2 children. Their 2nd child, Mary, had died at the age of 19 of fever leaving a husband and child. Amy named her next daughter Mary in her honor. They also lost a daughter named Elizabeth in infancy. The child she is carrying at the time of the census will be another daughter they will name Elizabeth, and also will tragically lose in infancy. Their future son in law, John Mutimer, lived next door. His wife passed away later in the year of 1841, and he married their oldest daughter, Lydia.[10]
In the 1851 census Amy (age 51) was the wife of Benjamin Bayles in Wilby, Suffolk, England. At this time, they were preparing for their move to the United States. They followed Amy's brother, John Cook, to Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania. Since the last census, all 15 of their children have been born. They also lost their son, George. He drowned in the river, Thames. They also lost 3 grandchildren, Naomi, William and William Mutimer died in infancy.[11]
Amy and her husband and their surviving children set sail on the Sir Robert Peel. They departed Liverpool, England and arrived in the port of New York on November 12, 1851.[12][13] Left behind were son-in-law Simon Wilson (husband of their late daughter Mary) and granddaughter Annie Wilson, but they would follow at a later time.
The Crossing took a great toll on the family. Amy's grandson Robert Mutimer died before they made land and was buried at sea. Within the year or two of arriving, They lost daughters Lydia, Ann, and Lettice, son Daniel and granddaughter Naomi Mutimer.
Her husband, Benjamin, took up farming again as he had done in England. The family first settled in Pennsylvania, Sharpsburg and Allegheny County. Around 1870, The Bayles moved to Riley, Kansas and in 1876, moved into Manhattan township.
In the 1870 census, I don't know why she is listed as Jennett. She and Benjamin are living with their daughter Rachel and her family in 1870. Maybe this is her middle name, or just a mistake by the census taker.[14]
In the 1875 census Amy (age 75) was in Pottawatomie, Anderson, Kansas, United States. She and her husband, Bemjamin, were living next door to their son John's family and their son Robert's family.[15]
Amy died July 27th 1877 and is buried in the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, Riley, Kansas. Her obituary can be found in the Manhattan Nationalist.[16][1]
Research Notes
I can't seem to find out anything about her parents.
I see that many other trees have her as a daughter of Samuel Cook, I can find that he had a daughter named Amy, but I can't find that he had a son named John.
I do know she had a brother named John Cook born in 1808, and came to America before her. So I can't say that this is the same Amy. Amy's son John actually lived with his Uncle, John Cook, for a time, and the fact of that is written into his biography.[17]
There are also a lot of very confused trees, that have her father as John Bayles. Her husband had a sister named Amy, and I guess the two have been confused.
I find Charles in the 1860 census living surrounded by the Bayles family. He is living next door to Eli and Ann Mills (Ann is Amy's granddaughter). He is living next door to John Bayles (Amy's son) and Robert Bayles (Amy's son).[18]
Researching, I find that Charles' oldest children were born in Horham, Suffolk just like Amy.[19]
Amy and her husband followed her brother John to Pennsylvania. I don't think it is unlikely that another sibling would do the same.
Possible Parents:
If Charles is a brother to Amy, he leads to possible parents.
In the 1841 census, Charles' children (Abigail, Dennis, Nathan and Edgar) are living in Horham, Suffolk, in the household of John and Ann Cook.[20]
Two strange census records in a row. In both records, I do think the wife in the household is Amy. I don't know why she is listed this way in these 2 records. Amy and Benjamin did not divorce, and they are found in the 1875 census together with Amy recorded correctly.
In the 1860 census, I can't find Amy. I do see who I believe to be her husband Benjamin, but living with him is Elizabeth Bayles. Elizabeth is Amy's age, so this could be a typo. Also living in the home are 2 teenage girls named Chester and Mary. Their daughter Mary died in 1856, and they didn't have a daughter named Chester. Speculation only, Chester could be Jeptha, and perhaps, Mary could be his wife.[21]
In the 1870 Census, I can't find Amy listed. I do find her husband Benjamin living with their daughter Rachel. With him is a woman named Jennett Bayles. She is the right age for Amy, so it is believed this one is her and a typo.[14]
