John Conyers Jr. was awarded the Spingarn Medal for outstanding achievement by an African American.

John Conyers was born on May 16, 1929 in Highland Park, Wayne, Michigan, United States. His parents were John Conyers and Lucille Simpson.

Mr. Conyers is the only African-American to serve in Congress for at least 50 years.

He died on October 27, 2019 in Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, United States

He served a year in Korea as an officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers and was awarded both combat and merit citations. He later served in the United States Army Reserves from 1954 to 1957.

He attended Wayne State University. [1]

In 1969, in partnership with his father and brother, John Conyers became the first African-American to own a Ford dealership in Michigan.[2]
