He served a year in Korea as an officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers and was awarded both combat and merit citations. He later served in the United States Army Reserves from 1954 to 1957.

In 1969, in partnership with his father and brother, John Conyers became the first African-American to own a Ford dealership in Michigan.^[2]
