Biography

Dodie was a Baptist

Early Life

Dodie Beatrice Conway was born on May 9, 1894,[1] in Onslow County, North Carolina.[2] She is the daughter of Allen David Conway, and his wife, Hopie Elizabeth Dixon.[1] At some point in her life, she accepted Christ as her Savior and was shown to have unshakeable faith.[3]

Family

On June 5, 1912, Dodie married Manley Odum, in Onslow County, North Carolina.[4] They had five daughters together, their names are as follows:
Mamie Lee Bright, née Odum (1912-1982).[5][6]
Nettie Burns, née Odum (1916-2003).[7]
Nellie Bell Odum (1919-1921) (Died young due to an incurable illness)[8][2]
4. Bessie Bell Huffman, née Odum (1924-1975).[9][10]
5. Daisy Lee Carney, née Odum (1926-2001).[11][12]
It is shown that Dodie stayed married to Manley until he died in 1936, as shown when Manley's marital status at death was “married.”[13] After Manley died, Dodie went on to marry another Odum named John Ed Odum. They married on the date July 15, 1937, in Onslow County, North Carolina,[14] making him the stepfather of Mamie, Nettie, Bessie and Daisy.

Later Life

Dodie is shown, in her death record, to have a Domestic occupation.[1] She had a close relationship with her granddaughters, Joan and Beatrice Huffman. She said to them one time, "We may be poor, but we have soap and water."[15] Because Dodie was a Christian, she influenced Beatrice to follow her ways, as well.

Death and Legacy

On November 22, 1961, Dodie died in Hubert, North Carolina,[1] due to a coma from Stomach Cancer. At Dodie's funeral, Christian music was played in honor of her.[15] She was buried in the Odum-Carney Cemetery, between her two husbands.[16]

Research Notes

  • According to her granddaughter (my grandmother), Dodie may not be her first name at birth. Nellie Bell Odum's (Dodie's daughter) have Dodie listed as Dorothy, so Dorothy is the estimated proper first name.
  • Even though no source proves her middle name is Beatrice, her Granddaughter (whom Dodie was close to) says Dodie's middle name was Beatrice.
