Mrs. Zillah Douglass, a resident of Rockford for nearly half a century and one of the first nurses of this city, died early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry D. Waldo.
She was born at Bangor, N. Y. And was married in Saranoc, N. Y. in 1847. She came to Rockford in 1852 and for thirty years practiced as a nurse, lending assistance to many who were in dire distress and providing effectual assistance to the physicians of this city. She founded the first Society of Nurses in Rockford in 1884, serving as president until it was disbanded. She also established a monthly journal to which she contributed.
In 1890 Mrs. Douglass went to Seattle where she continued her nursing. In that city she founded a woman’s club.
Three daughters are left to mourn the passing of the aged woman. They are Mrs. Henry D. Waldo, Mrs. A. P. Yates, and Mrs. George A. Bishop of Seattle, and a step daughter, Mrs. J. M. Atkinson.
