Elizabeth (Comyn) de Bromwich is Notable.
European Aristocracy
Elizabeth Comyn was a member of the aristocracy in British Isles.

Elizabeth Comyn was a daughter of John Comyn 'the Red', Lord of Badenoch, and Joan de Valence.[1][2][3]

She was born 01 November 1299.[2]

Her brother John Comyn of Badenagh [Badenoch] appears to have died at Bannockburn in 1314 but no inquisitions were returned at the time. However, an Inquisition of 08 Jun, 19 Edward II [1326] recorded that his heirs were his sisters Joan, Countess of Athol, aged 30 on 10 May last, and Elizabeth age 26 at the feast of All Saints, 19 Edward II [The feast of all Saints being 01 November, Elizabeth aged 26 on 01 November 1325 may have been born on 01 Nov 1299][4]

She and her sister Joan were noted in 10 Edward II (1316-1317) as the heirs of Aymer Comyn, son of her brother John Comyn.[5]

In the latter part of 17 Edward II (1324) they were noted (along with John, Lord Hastings) as heirs of Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke[6] His Inquisition recorded that Joan and Elizabeth were the daughters of John Comyn, knight, and his wife Joan, the sister of Aymer de Valence.

Detention by the Despensers

In March 1324/1325 an order was given to deliver various lands including Goodrich Castle (Herefordshire) to Elizabeth Comyn kinswoman and one of the heirs of 'Aymer de Valencia', earl of Pembroke[7] However, at this time Elizabeth was being detained by Hugh Despenser and his son Hugh the younger at Kenynton [Kennington] Surrey and latterly at Wockynge [Woking, Surrey] and Purefrith [Pirbright, Surrey].[8][9]

Apparently through pressure brought by the Despensers during the year and a half of her detention, on 06 Apr 1325 a Licence was granted for Elizabeth Comyn, to enfeoff Hugh le Despenser, the younger, of the castle and manor of Goodrich Castle in the march of Wales, and to enfeoff Hugh le Despenser, earl of Winchester, of the manor of Paynewswyk, Gloucestershire.[10] She was then detained for a further half a year before being released.

Marriage to Richard, Lord Talbot

Relatively soon after her release she married Richard Talbot as on 23 Mar, 1 Edward III (1326/1327) an order was given to deliver to Richard Talbot and Elizabeth Comyn his wife lands in Ireland that had been in the possession of Aymer de Valencia, earl of Pembroke.[2][11]

Warner[12] (citing SAL MS 122, p. 75) stated that "an entry in Edward II's last chamber account, dated 9 July 1326, records a gift of ten marks from Edward to Sir Richard Talbot, a retainer of the younger Despenser, because Richard "was very poor" and because he had "secretly married the lady Comyn" at Pirbright".

Marriage to John de Bromwych

She married second, between 21 Feb 1357/1358 and 16 Feb 1360/1361, John de Bromwich, Knight.[1][2]

In 1372-1373 it was recorded that Elizabeth had been the wife of John Bromwych, Knight.[13]

Children

  • Gilbert Talbot (born c 1332)[2]

According to "The Peerage of England"[14] Richard Talbot had additional children as follows:

  • Thomas Talbot (a priest)
  • Catherine Talbot (married Roger Chandos, Lord Chandos)
  • Jane Talbot (married Sir Nicholas Poynings

However, The Peerage of England may be in error. Thomas Talbot and Catherine Talbot were of an earlier generation, i.e. the children of Richard Talbot and Sarah Beauchamp.

Holland[15] placed Jane, daughter of a Sir [blank] Talbot, as the wife of a Sir Nicholas Poynings, son of Sir Michael Poynings.

Death and Inquisition Post Mortem

She died 20 Nov 1372.[1][2]

Inquisition of Elizabeth, who was wife of Richard Talbot, chivaler, taken at Gloucester 07 December 1372:[16]

The said Elizabeth held in her demesne as of fee, of the King in chief, on the day she died, the manors of Pavneswyk and Morion Valence. She died 20th November last. Gilbert Talbot, son and heir of the said Richard and Elizabeth, is aged 30 years and more.

In 1373 her second husband and her son Gilbert Talbot jointly held 2 knights' fees in Moreton and Whaddon.[17]
