Biography

I was born in Leicester, England.

Chris Colwell

I am the son of John Alfred Colwell and Sylvia Anne Pallant.

John Colwell & Sylvia Colwell

I still live in Leicestershire and my brother and sister still live in the house in which I was born.

Me outside the house I was born in

I have been in the knitwear industry all of my working life as a Knitting Machine Technician, a job in which I trained to Senior Craftsman level.
During my early 20's my work took me to Italy, Puerto Rico, Canada and the USA. Whilst I was in the USA I lived in New Jersey but travelled all over the country installing and repairing knitting machines, cutting machines and industry specific computers.

On returning to England I soon met my wife and we have been married for over 30 years.

Me and my wife

We have grown up 2 children.

My Children

I have had an interest in genealogy for about 20 years and originally started my journey using Friends Reunited.
After joining Wiki Tree in 2017, I realised many of the mistakes that I had made in my family history.
I was doing the same as many other people and copy/pasting from the many unproven trees that appear on line.

Early on I became a member of the England Project, soon becoming Team Leader for the Leicestershire project.
As I gained more experience I became a Trailblazer for the England Projects Orphan Trail, in which I am now acting as a co-leader for the OT1 part of the trail.

The majority of my ancestors come from the Leicestershire area or the surrounding counties, with a few hailing from Suffolk and Bedfordshire.

Having taken a DNA test as part of the founder population for My Heritage, I have found matches that confirm at least 3 of my Grandparents family lines.

My Heritage gives me an ethnicity of 99.2% English (although as many of you will know, this probably should not be taken on face value).

DNA matches also indicate that I have a fairly strong connection to the Netherlands, with many strong matches, but I have still to discover that connection.

My main brick wall is actually on my Colwell line. This ends with my 2x Great Grandfather William Colwell who is said to hail from Northamptonshire.
I have his fathers name as John on his marriage certificate and a possible christening in 1822 in Daventry, Northamptonshire for a William Caldwell, born to John and Elizabeth Caldwell.
But that is where the line ends and as yet I haven't found any DNA matches that give me any indications of his origins.

Hi Chris

I wrote to you recently as part of the England Project's six-monthly check-in with our project members. I haven't heard back from you. I hope you are well.

If you could please drop me a quick note to confirm whether you are still interested in the project and wish to remain an active member, that would be very helpful.

If we do not hear from you within the next 2 weeks, we will assume you are no longer active in the England Project and remove you from our list of project members. You would be most welcome to re-apply to join the project at a later time by signing-up on the project’s G2G welcome post.

Many thanks!

Elizabeth, England Project Leader

We also welcome any feedback on things you would like to see the project do more of in the future.

Dear Chris, I've just had a look at my connection to you on WikiTree. It seems to be via the Barnards who were ancestors of mine. I have seen there is a Potts; I have some ancestors called Potts on my mother's side whilst the Pallants are on my father's side. I think we may be more closely connected than appears so far on WikiTree. I think the Pallants may have travelled round quite a lot in the South of England and then my great-grandparents moved to Stockton-upon-Tees where Robert was a blacksmith. The Potts family were fisherfolk at Redcar on the coast of North Yorkshire.
Hi Chris,

I would like to thank you for all your contributions towards the goals of the England Project during the past six months. We've achieved a huge amount during this period and we couldn't have done it without you and our other project members.

As the England Project Leaders, we are completing our six monthly check-in with all project members.

Are you happy to stay in your current project teams? Which teams are you most active in? Are there other teams you would like to join or become more active in?

Also, do you have any feedback on what the project is doing well and anything we could do better in the future?

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message. I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks!

Joan, England Project Leader
