Biography

David was born in 1761, the son of Alexander Colvin and Elizabeth Kennedy of Denovan in the parish of Dunipace, Stirlingshire.[1][2]

Extract from European inhabitants in Bengal, excluding those in the service of the East India Company or the Crown 1805: “Colvin, David; district residence: Calcutta Police Office; place residence: King’s Bench; native place: Scotland; employment: Merchant & Agent; year arrived in India: 1784; authority to reside: Governor General in Council, 1794.” ... with another entry, dated 1793: “Colvin, David; district residence: (Zillah of Patna); place residence: Patna; occupation: Agent for the Opium Contractor; length of residence in Bengal: 9 years.”[3]

David Colvin, Esq., was recorded in the 1814 Bengal Directory as a passenger departing from Calcutta on the ship, Union, Captain Robert Rankine, master.[4]

David Colvin died on the 25th July 1839 in London, where he resided at 64, Gloucester Place, aged seventy-eight years.[5][6] His body was buried in the churchyard of St Marylebone, London.[7]

The last will and testament of David Colvin, Esq., was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on the 26th February 1840, having appointed his brother, James Colvin, and his nephews Alexander John Colvin, Alexander Colvin, and Bazett David Colvin, executors.[6]Mr. Colvin left legacies to the following individuals: †

  • his nephew, Alexander John Colvin;
  • his niece, Mrs Blunt;
  • his godson, David Colvin Blunt;
  • his nephew, Bazett David Colvin;
  • his nephew Alexander Colvin, and also to his niece [Elizabeth Jackson née Colvin], the wife of the aforesaid Alexander Colvin, and to Mrs. Colvin's sisters, Anna Lady Colquhoun, Henrietta the wife of Mr Walford, and Margaret, a Spinster;
  • [his grand nephew,] Thomas Bazett Tytler;
  • his niece, Mrs Ainslie;
  • his grand niece, Mrs Brown of Leicester; and also her cousin Duncan Spottiswoode;
  • his godson, Stewart Colvin Bayley;
  • his namesake, David Colvin Stewart;
  • [his nephews,] John Russell Colvin, Binny James Colvin, and Edward Thomas Colvin;
  • Edward Colvin Oakes, with a solicitation to his executors to procure an appointment to Addiscombe for him, the money to answer his school bills; also, his sister, Mary Oakes [his grandchildren, by his daughter, the late Elizabeth Oakes née Colvin, who died in 1834];
  • his nephew, John Colvin;
  • his coachman, his butler, John Howard, as also the cook and the housemaid;
  • his niece, Jean Blagrave;
  • his niece, Mrs Turnbull [née Eliza Ann Colvin]; and
  • his friend and partner, William Crawford, Esq.[6]
  • No mention was made of any children.

Research notes

  • According to Dr. Rev. James Kennedy-Bailie's genealogical work on the Kennedy family, David Colvin died unmarried.[2] Consistent with that assertion, a record of a marriage has not been found in the Scottish, East Indies, or English records.~Kilpatrick-1128
