Biography

Susannah was born in 1810 at Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire and baptised in 1813 at Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire^[1]. In 1835^[2] she married Allen Brooksbank, a Butcher at Manchester Cathedral and they had five children. However, Allen died in 1845 shortly after their last child was born. It is not clear whether Allen had trained Susannah or she had picked up the skills from helping him run the shop, but in 1851^[3] she was recorded as a Butcher at Hurst, Ashton under Lyne. Interestingly her nephew William Brooksbank was working as her Assistant then, although he was wrongly recorded as her brother-in-law. Susannah continued to work as a Butcher at Hurst through 1861^[4] and 1871^[5] as her children gradually left home. She died in 1880^[6] at Hurst and was buried there.
