Biography

Herbert was born in 1887. He was the son of William Collins and Catherine Dippelsman.

Printed in the Warwick Examiner and Times Saturday 30 September 1911 COLLINS—SPREADBOROUGH. On Wednesday morning, a pretty wedding, and one of much interest, was celebrated at Christ Church, Killarney, when Miss Jean Spreadborough, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. O. Spreadborough, "Sunnyside," Killarney, was married to Mr. H. M. Collins, fourth son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Collins, "CoIinora," Warwick. As the bride's parents, and their predecessors, belong to the oldest residents and most popular families in the Killarney district, the church was crowded long before the wedding party arrived. The church was decorated with a profusion of lovely white flowers and ferns by Miss Lomas (Warwick), and a magnificent wedding bell, composed of white may, lilies and carnations (the work of Mr. James Higgleton) made a lovely artistic centre, under which the bridal party stood. The tongue of the bell was arranged full of confetti, which was showered on the happy couple as the minister declared them man and wife. The service was choral, the Rev. A. E. Hockey officiating. Mr. G. Brookes (Warwick) presided at the organ. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, looked dainty in a beautiful gown of pale cream chiffon taffeta silk, tunic skirt defined with pearl embroidered silk insertion and silk fringe. The bodice was finely tucked, vest and undersleeves of silk Tosca net ornamented with sequin and pearl trimmings, neck and sleeves edged with pearls. A pretty cream girdle was worn round the waist, and sprays of orange blossom on left side of bodice adorned it profusely ; large white hat with white lilac and wings of white satin. She carried a lovely shower bouquet composed of white carnations, stocks, sweetpeas, freezias, Arum lilies and asparagus plumosa. Miss E. Spreadborough (sister of the bride) was chief bridesmaid, and looked chic in a pretty pink satin striped canvas voile frock, cream silk net vest ornamented with pipings of silk of same shade and applique trimming ; smart silk crinoline straw hat turned off face, lined with black silk and ornamented with wreath of pink roses and black ribbon velvet bow. Her bouquet was made of white stocks, sweetpeas, carnations, pink roses, and asparagus plumosa. Miss Lomas, Warwick (cousin of the bride), wore a pretty frock of saxe-blue crystaline trimmed with bands of silk braiding and buttons of same shade, pretty white silk lace vest arranged with clusters of cornflowers and black ribbon velvet bows. Her bouquet consisted of white stocks, carnations, sweetpeas, wisteria and asparagus plumosa. Mrs. O. Spreadborough (mother of the bride) was gowned in black paillette silk, tunic trimmed with silk insertion and fringe, bodice arranged with cream silk lace vest richly ornamented with silk insertion and oriental trimming ; black toque trimmed with sequins and tulle, relieved with mauve tulle mount. Mrs. Collins, Warwick (mother of the bride groom), wore a pretty gown of black paillette silk, cream silk spotted net vest, trimmings of black ribbon velvet and jet buttons ; black straw toque ornamented with sequins and cluster of pink roses. Mrs. F. Grayson, "Mildura," Warwick, handsome gown of black charmeuse, richly trimmed with black and silver insertion and silk fringe, best of silk Tosca net, finished with jet tassels; black silk crinoline straw toque, sequin trimmings, and mount of black silk lace. Mrs. G. H. Lomas, Warwick, black paillette silk gown, cream lace vest and trimmings of silk insertion and applique; black straw toque ornamented with black satin ribbon, feathers and white ospreys. After the ceremony the guests drove to the Royal Hall, and were received in the vestibule, by Mr. and Mrs. O. The wedding breakfast was served at long tables arranged in the centre of the hall, and were artistically decorated with lovely palms and a profusion of white flowers, and Maiden hair fern. The large three-tier wedding cake was arranged in the centre of the bride's table. The catering and table decorations were carried out by Miss Canning in her usual good style. The usual toasts were honoured. Mr. and Mrs. Collins left by motor amidst showers of confetti and rice, to join the mail train at Warwick for Sydney, and the Blue Mountains, where the honeymoon will be spent, returning by the round trip via Tweed Heads. The bride wore a travelling frock of vieux rose striped voile, trimmed with silk and braiding of same shade ; smart black Tagal straw-hat, adorned with point lace, and cluster of amethyst roses.
