Son of Joseph Collier, Sr. and Elizabeth Hoover, Nathaniel was born near current-day Myerstown in Jackson Township, Dauphin (now Lebanon) County, PA. He was a millwright who married Elizabeth Fetterolf and moved to Upper Paxton Township about 1808. He attended Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Killinger (where his daughter Hana was christened in 1808). In 1814, Nathaniel was a member of the drafted militia of the 8th Company, 152nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, 6th Division, Pennsylvania Militia (organized from Dauphin, Lebanon, and Berks Counties). On a class list dated 11 Aug 1814, he was shown as First Class, 37 years (the latter of which establishes his estimated year of birth as 1777).
