Biography

The son of Ira Pennock Coller and Susannah A (Anderson) Coller, Ernest Coller was born in Clinton Township, Michigan[citation needed] in 1892, residing with his family in 1900 in Detroit, Michigan.[1] His father passed away in 1906 and his mother remarried in 1908, marrying John Frederick Schreder in 1908. and in 1910, Ernest lived with his mother, stepfather, and his siblings, residing together in Tecumseh Township, Michigan, while his stepfather farmed.[2]

Ernest married Kathryn Louise (Haas) Helmer, the daughter of Frederick Haas and Louise Kurtz, marrying in Detroit, Michigan on May 15, 1915[3] and having one son together.

Ernest registered for the World War I draft when he was 24, registering in Detroit, Michigan on June 5, 1917.[4] He stated that he lived at 407 Avery Avenue in Detroit and that he worked as a punch press operator for the Studebaker Corporation, in Detroit. Ernest was described as a slender man, 5'11" tall, with blue eyes and light-colored hair. He enlisted in the United States Army, enlisting at Jackson, Michigan on August 21, 1917.[5] He enlisted as a Private and served for two months in Company D of the 330th Field Artillery Regiment, being discharged on November 30, 1917.

In 1920, Ernest and his wife lived in Jackson, Michigan, where Ernest worked as a mechanical engineer.[6] Their son was born in 1924, and died of acute gastroenteritis at the age of three, in 1924.[7] His marriage ended in divorce earlier that year, with the decree being final on June 26, 1924.[8]

Ernest remarried, marrying Minnie Hazel (Wilcox) Coller, the daughter of Erva L. Wilcox and Mary Jane Clark, in Mason, Michigan on April 29, 1926.[9] Minnie had been married previously to Arthur B. Houghtaling, with whom she had two children, and a stillborn infant. Ernie and Minnie likely met at work, as they each worked as inspectors at a factory. They made their home together in Mason, Michigan, where Ernie worked as a general foreman at an automobile factory.[10] By 1940, they lived together in Jackson, Michigan, where Ernest worked as a foreman at Sparks-Wittington Company, an automobile horn factory.[11]

Ernest registered for the World War II draft when he was 49, registering in Jackson, Michigan on April 27, 1942.[12] He stated that he lived at 104 East Morrell Street in Jackson and that he worked at Sparks-Wittington in Jackson. Ernest was described as 5'10" tall and 250 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes, and noted that he had an appendectomy scar. Having registered in the "old man's draft," he did not enlist.

Widowed in 1947 after his wife's death at the age of 58, Ernie moved to Oklahoma, residing in Tuttle Township, remarrying that same year, marrying Nora Amy (Byram) Coller, the daughter of John Williamson Byram and Candace Marquilla Hawkins on August 10, 1947.[citation needed] Nora had been married previously to Harry Dewitt Jones (1901-1945). They made their together in Tuttle Township where, in 1950, he did not cite a paid occupation on the federal census enumerated but later served as City Councilman and Mayor for several years.[citation needed]

Ernest Coller passed away in Tuttle Township, Oklahoma{{citation needed|| at the age of 73[13]. Buried at Fairview Cemetery, Tuttle, Grady County, Oklahoma[14]
