Josiah Cohen was born on 29 November 1840 in Plymouth, England. He emigrated to the United States in August 1858 sailing aboard the "Devonshire" from London. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 21 June 1865.[1]
Josiah was an attorney and later in life, a judge. At the time of the 1870 United States Census he was living in the First Ward of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with his wife, Caroline Naumurg Cohen.[2]
Josiah may have speculated in land aside from his legal activities. He sold the lot located at 126 Sheffield Street (1226 Sheffield Street today) to Charles W. Cooper and his wife, Elizabeth Pauline Demuth Cooper in 1879.[3] He is shown as the owner of another lot farther down the same street on an 1890 Real Estate Plat book of Allegheny City.
In 1890 Josiah and Carrie applied for a passport.[4]. Although not stated in the application, this trip may have been to England and Germany in order to visit relations.
Following a return to Allegheny County, Josiah and Carrie lived as renters in various parts of the city. In the 1900 Census they are found living in the household of Solomon L. Fleishmann in Precinct 7 of Allegheny City.[5] In the 1920 Census they are renting on Maryland Avenue in Ward 7 of the City of Pittsburgh.[6] In the 1930 Census they are found Bigelow Boulevard in Pittsburgh. [7]
Josiah passed away on 11 June 1930.[8] He is interred at Westview Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[9]
