Twee maande later, op 11 Desember 1899, sneuwel hy en sy seun, Diederik Dauth, by Scholtznek in die slag van Magersfontein. // On 12 October 1899, General de la Rey instructed Hansie Coetzee and his burgers to break up the railway track at Kraaipan. There he fired the first shot in the Anglo-Boer War. Two months later, on 11 December 1899, he and his son, Diederik Dauth, were killed at Scholtznek in the battle of Magersfontein.
