Sports career
Coetzee competed from 1974 to 1986 and again in 1993 and 1997 and was one of the most well-known South African boxers to lace up his gloves. He finished his career with 40 fights, 33 wins, six defeats and one draw. Twenty-one of his victories came via knockout.
On 23 September 1983 in Cleveland, Ohio, he knocked out Michael Dokes in the tenth round and became the first white heavyweight champion since Ingemar Johansson in 1959 and the first South African to win a world heavyweight title.[2]
Unfortunately, Coetzee lost his title shortly afterwards when he defends it against Greg Page in 1984. [3]
The movie titled Boksburg Bomber will recreate his epic, victorious fight against Dokes to win the WBA championship. The movie is set to be released in 2020. Our biggest hope is that the film portrays the legend in the light he deserves. [8]
