Tech Sergeant John Cleveland was Killed in Action when the bomber Wongo Wongo crashed off of the Greek island of Corfu during World War II.
John was born in Rock Island on 11 June 1922. He was the son of Carroll Cleveland and Anna Velma Marvin
He passed away on 1 August 1943 when the B-24 Bomber, 'Wongo Wongo', crashed into the ocean off the Greek island of Corfu. He was the Engineer and Top Turret Gunner on the bomber. Wongo Wongo was the lead bomber of Operation Tidal Wave a low level bombing mission against the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania.
