William (Bill) was born in 1929, son of Ada (nee Nader) from the Southern Highlands and Colin William Clegg of Broken Hill. His family moved to Gunnedah from Barraba when he was around 7 years old. He later served on the Gunnedah Municipal from 1956 to 1980, and was mayor from 1969 to 1980. Bill passed away in 2013.
From his obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald May 2, 2013:
Bill Clegg was a great figure in the history of Gunnedah, a town in north-eastern NSW. He was elected to Gunnedah Municipal Council in 1956 and retired in 1999, after 43 years continuous service. He was deputy mayor for five terms and mayor from 1969 to 1980. There was hardly a local organisation that did not benefit from Clegg's energy, experience and enterprise - the war memorial pool, the indoor heated pool and the Remembrance Grove are just a few. ...
William Ronald Clegg was born in Goulburn on September 9, 1929, the only surviving child of Colin Clegg, from Broken Hill, and his wife Ada (nee Nader) from the southern highlands.
He spent his early years in Barraba and the family moved to Gunnedah when he was eight. He went to St Xavier's School and St Mary's College.
