Birth

Charles was born in Ilminster, Somerset, England about 1831, the son of John Cleal.

Marriage - 1

On 20 July 1856 Sarah Margaret Remington and Charles Cleal were married in Saint Martin In The Fields, Westminster, London. ^[1]

In the 1861 census of St Mary Colechurch, Old Jewry, Central London in 2 Dove Court, Charles, 30, hair dresser (born Ilminster, Somerset, England) and Sarah, 30 (born Southwark, Surrey) are living with his father John, 72, (born Ilminster) widower, a Chelsea Pensioner. ^[2]

On 27 September 1870 Sarah Cleal passed away in Auckland, aged 40. ^[3]

On 24 May 1871 Rosa Elizabeth Hill and Charles Cleal were married in Auckland. ^[4]

Death

On 10 May 1895 he prepared a hand-written will leaving all his goods to his wife Rosa.

THE AUCKLAND SUICIDE. Auckland, 24th August. At the inquest on the body of Charles Cleal, licensee of the Park Hotel, who committed suicide this morning, a verdict of Temporary Insanity was returned.

He was buried in the Symonds St Cemetery, Auckland City.

His widow remarried - to John Smith, Auckland.^[10]
