Biography

Parents

Other supposed siblings of Matthew have extensive records. After extensive research, no record can be found that links him to Richard Clayton and Margaret Unknown. He is being detached until proof of this parentage can be found.


Assunpink Creek is included in Delaware River frontage boundaries.

Based upon information given later in life Matthew was probably born 1660 in Lancashire, England. His father, Richard Clayton was an early Quaker convert who worked and resided at Swarthmoor Hall, Lancashire, England during the time of George Fox and who became one of the early convert missionaries in England.

Emigration
At some point Mathew and three of his siblings, Abraham, David and Sarah emigrated as Quakers. Sarah to Rhode island, Mathew, David and Abraham to New Jersey.

In the year 1695 the records of the Nottingham Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey inhabitants included Mathew Clayton. [1] Nottingham Twp. was founded 1688 as part of Burlington in the Province of West Jersey.

12 April 1698 Mathew Clayton, Owner of Mathey Clayton Mill which owned land adjoining Mahlon Stacey was named in a land document describing Mahlon Stacy land for survey and legal description purposes. [2] Locations: West Jersey, Burlington; Shabbicunick Creek; Mills (Mill Lots).

28 June 1699 Mathew Clayton married Sybilla Buckworth at Burlington, New Jersey. [3] She was reported to be from Yorkshire who'came to America as an indentured servant of John and Alice Fullwood.'

In a Quaker Court Booke, recorded in 1698/9 Burlington, New Jersey, Mathew Clayton is included among the members of the Courts 'Traverse Jury'. In this same document what follows after the court organization and appointee's is a list of complaints and who is making them[4]

Mathew passed away in 1698.

Wife Sybilla married James Harpin on 28 Jun 1699 at Burlington, New Jersey. [5]
