Camille Claudel is Notable.

Camille Claudel was a French sculptor and graphic artist.[1] Her sculpture was figurative and done in bronze and marble.

Camille was born on December 8, 1864, in Fère-en-Tardenois, Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France. Her father and mother were Louis Prosper Claudel (1826-1913) and Louise Athanaïse Cécile Cerveaux (1840-1929). The diplomat and poet Paul Louis Charles Marie Claudel (1868-1955) was her younger brother.[2]

Camille Claudel had two famous sculptors as mentors. Her first mentor was Alfred Boucher. Her second mentor was François-Auguste-René Rodin (1840-1917). Camille and Rodin became lovers.

After 1905 Camille began to show symptoms of mental illness and was diagnosed as having schizophrenia. She was admitted to the psychiatric hospital of Ville-Évrard in Neuilly-sur-Marne. Unfortunately she spent the next thirty years hospitalized and died in psychiatric custody. Her family had been told she was well enough to live in the family home but her mother refused to take her home.

She did not marry or have children.

Camille Claudel died at the age of seventy-eight years on October 19, 1943, in the Montdevergues asylum in Avignon, Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France. At her death she was buried in a mass grave. Later a cenotaph was erected in the Montfavet cemetery in Avignon and an In Memoriam plaque was affixed near her parents' grave in the cemetery of Villeneuve-sur-Fère.[3][4]

Her work was rediscovered in the second half of the twentieth century. A film called Camille Claudel staring Isabelle Adjani as Camille was dedicated to her in 1988. The film received numerous awards at the Césars and two Oscar nominations.[5]
