Biography

Nigel was born in 1954. He is the son of Bruce Clark and Moreen Jacobs.[1]

Nigel was christened on 29 May 1954 at St Agnes Church in Glenhuntly, Victoria, Australia.

He married Sandra McDonald. His father Bruce Clark conducted their marriage service.

Sandra had two children by a previous marriage - Kerry Ellis and Leigh Ellis. Nigel was their dad/step-dad from when they were very young (5 years old and 4 years old).

Nigel and Sandra have two children together - Justin Clark and Laurie Clark.

Nigel is still living.

Genealogy Interest

I've started researching my family tree. In the process I have "adopted" some orphaned profiles that actually link with some of my ancestors.

With the aid of an excellent coach - Leandra Ford - I initially undertook a "Voyage" to improve the profiles of several of my great grandparents and learn more about the functionality of WikiTree at the same time. This has got me "hooked". Let's see where the journey and learning gets to over time!

Genealogy - Profile Progress

  1. My genealogy journey started in April 2021.
  2. As at March 2022, over 4,000 profiles have been created (albeit some are quite "scant" on detail at this stage).
  3. Since then, I have been adding new profiles at the rate of about 70 a week.
  4. As at June 2023, my main focus "fleshing out" my CC7 connections (i.e. people who are within 7 steps of me either by blood or marriage). My CC7 count on June 10, 2023 is 5450 people.

Genealogy Assistance - Acknowledgements

There are a number of people who have assisted me in my genealogy research as follows:

  • Moreen Jacobs - my mum, who gave me a number of family papers and photos to help get me started.
  • My three sisters - Bronwyn, Robyn and Megan - who provided some of the family specific information and took the time to review some of the profiles that I had drafted.
  • My wife Sandra who provided information on her side of the family, along with information provided by her sisters, Pat Marsden, Penny Richardson and Dianne Brain.
  • Leandra Ford - who helped me on the path by critically reviewing and helping to develop a couple of specific family profiles to use as "models" for other profiles.
  • Madeleine Knizek - For providing specific information on the extended Jacobs side of the family.
  • Madeleine Rankine - For providing specific information on the extended Jacobs side of the family.
  • Eileen Strikwerda - for providing specific information on the extended Jacobs side of the family.
  • Sharryn Nankervis - for providing specific information on the Clark side of the family.
  • Dorothy Barke for providing specific information on the Amsden side of the family.

I would sincerely like to thank and acknowledge each of these fantastic people for their contributions.

Dear Nigel,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in with project members. Please review the following and respond to let us know that you are content with your current team or if you would like to be more involved.

The Project operates in a team structure. There are currently three participant PIP Teams -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

There are currently three different Biography Teams - The Biography Team, the Abandoned Team, and the Popular Team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team. The Biography Team works on profiles from their watchlist and other profiles that interest them.

Are you happy with the Team you are on? If you are interested in working with a different Team, please let us know.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup and text chat Discord channel for our project. (You will need your Wiki ID for both). Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Hi Nigel,

We're contacting you for the annual Australia Project membership checkin. We really appreciate your involvement in the Project in the last year. Thank you so much for all your help to improve Australian profiles on WikiTree.

Please could you reply to this message, or send me a private message to let us know if you'd like to stay on in the Project, and if you'd like to make any changes to the teams that you belong to. The teams are listed on Australia Project Teams.

If you've moved on to other things for the moment, that's absolutely fine. We'd appreciate if you'd let us know so that we can remove you from the membership list.

Over the past year, Australia Project members have been more active on Discord. We're finding it a fun way to communicate as a project. If you're not on Discord yet, here's some information - Help:Discord. If you are already on the WikiTree Discord server, let us know, and we can send you an invite link to the dedicated Australia Project server (WikiAustralia) where all our chat channels are located. It's a great way to communicate with other members on your project team/s, or for any general questions.

We're always happy to receive any ideas or suggestions that you have to make our project even better.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

The Australia Project Leadership Team ~ Gillian, Margaret and Veronica

Thanks Margaret,

I'm happy to stay on the NSW team. My main focus at the moment is on increasing my CC7 connections and improving the CC7 profiles on my watchlist. However, I also review and update at least 50 profiles/errors on the Data Doctor list each week - mainly relating to NSW profiles. I'm also moving a number of profiles to the "unsourced list" from unsourced orphaned profiles that I am finding on the DD lists. That will help to give us enough profiles to work on for the next Source-A-Thon.

I don't use discord - I have 6 email accounts and that is enough of a challenge keeping those up to date!

I hope that this is okay?

Thanks for your guidance and leadership in the Australia project.

Hi Nigel, you've done some terrific work on the Dykes family, well done.

My line of the family is from Cumbria, there's a village called Dykesfield just northwest of Carlisle in England. I believe name Dykes comes from association with the nearby Hadrian's Wall (when the Roman's built it, it was probably just called a "dyke". There are Scottish "Dykes", and they appear to originate from the area close to the Antonine Wall, which is another Roman-built dyke about 100 miles north of Hadrian's Wall. I have put together a blog www.dykeshistory.blogspot.com which you may be interested in visiting. All the best matey, Ian Dykes (Dykes-950)

If you would like to stay in the project, please reply to this message or send me a private message to let us know that you would like to stay on. Alternatively, if your WikiTree and research interests have moved away from Australia, please let us know and we can remove you from the membership list for the moment. We are also keen to know if you want to make any changes to the team or teams that you want to focus on. Take a look on Australia Project Teams to see what teams there are to choose from. If you want to discuss this, or have any questions or suggestions about the Australia Project we'd love to hear your ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to get back to us!

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for taking the time to "check in". Greatly appreciated.

I am happy to "keep on keeping" on with what I am doing if that is okay. My main focus is still on NSW profiles, although I have added a number of profiles in other states that are linked to the NSW profiles that I've worked on. I've enjoyed the "Connect-A-Thons" and "Source-A-Thon" this year and will participate again next year if the timing works.

Right now, I am working on the "Missing Links" report to try to "fill out" my CC7 connections where possible.

I hope that this is okay with you?

Thanks for your message. Would you mind if I just keep "doing what I'm doing " for a while longer please? I've added over 4,000 profiles in the past 10 months and made over 20,000 contributions. Most (but not all) of those profiles are linked to me via marriage or blood. I have a pile of about 400 profiles that I am working my way through at the moment, and as you know, each time you look at a profile, it opens more "doors" and profiles to work on. When I come across profiles that need some TLC, I do what I can to help improve them. Is this okay with you and Robin? kind regards...Nigel

Hi Sharon,

The profile manager for William Henry John Dent (Dent - 1745) is Sue Crerar. I linked his wife to him - Emily (McDonald) Dent. I then added their 5 children. So if you like, I can "orphan" the profiles of the 5 children so that you can "adopt" them as profile manager. Your decision (I just have to work out how to do it, but I think it should be pretty straight forward). Take care.........Nigel

Hi Gillian

Thanks for the feedback - greatly appreciated. I certainly would like to stay involved with the Australia Project. Interestingly, I thought that I would spend most time with Victorian profiles, but as it has turned out, I have spent more time in NSW. I have 1,997 profiles of people on my watchlist. In all cases they are linked to my ancestors and their extended families directly or by more distantly by marriage. I have either created them or adopted them as I have come across them where they have a linkage to my ancestors. As far as feedback/questions are concerned: 1. Is there one spot either in Wikitree generally or in the Australia Project Pages where there is a "master source" list e.g. - links to the historical BDM Registers in each state. - links to historical immigration records for each state. - links to military service records - links to burial information - links to newspaper records - links to any other potentially relevant information. 2. Tips on searching these records (including which ones are free and which ones are behind paywalls). 3. Guidelines or examples for each site linked in 1 above on how to correctly reference the source record. 4. I have enjoyed participating in the two "thons" this year - connect-a-thon and -source-a-thon. Does the Australia Project have some "Mini-versions" of these as a way of encouraging more participation? The "source -a-thon" really opened my eyes on just how many "poor quality" profiles there are in the system. Maybe targeting some further improvements on these profiles may lead to more general participation.........just a thought. I have really appreciated the support from other WikiTreers as I have been "learning the ropes"..........I have a long way to go, but I will keep working on my approach! Take care..........kind regards.........Nigel

Hi Nigel, great feedback!! Thanks for that. This is the page for Australian Sources - Australia Sources and Citation Examples - we have now divided it into separate pages for each state and the territories as well. The pages are a 'work in progress', so if you find something missing, you can post to the google group, or on the relevant page, or ask a general question about particular sources. Questions like that usually help lots of us.

You're the second person who has mentioned Mini challenges today, so we'll look at that again!!

Let me know if you'd like to change teams, but you're also fine to stay in Victoria. Gillian

Many thanks again and God Bless ----- Joanna

Hi Joanna,

Thanks for the great feedback. I joined Wikitree in April this year. I started by adding my direct ancestors then just kept adding extended family as links became apparent. To date, I've added just over 1,500 profiles. I'm retired, and since July, I've been in lockdown in Sydney (freedom day tomorrow)!.....so....adding sources to profiles and adding new profiles has helped to keep me sane. Each time I open a profile, I try to add a sourced fact to it. However, the best profiles that I have seen on WikiTree contain a combination of well sourced facts (birth, marriage, children, death) and some personal stories and photos from people who either knew them directly or have had stories and photos passed down to them from other family members. Please feel free to make any additions to any of the profiles that I've added. Take care..........kidn regards..Nigel

Fantastic, thanks for the information Del. I created this profile last weekend as part of the "Wikithon Connection Challenge". What I tried to do was to see how far back and wide I could make connections that linked back to my family. In the instance of William Soden, the connection is one through marriage - Clark to Jacobs to Brailey to Soden. The "challenge" was to create as many profiles as possible over a 3 day period with a minimum of one genuine source. I created just over 160. My intent is then to go back to each of those profiles over the next few weeks to "flesh out" the profiles by adding more sources, and any other information that I can find. I am more than happy to pass over stewardship of any profiles that you would like to look after. Just let me know......kind regards...........Nigel

P.S. Based on your information, I have updated the profile for William Soden (Soden-508) and added some more questions into the "Research Notes' section.
