Horace, a merchant, was the founder of the H.B. Claflin Company, a wholesale dry goods company with his brother, Aaron.^[7][3][8] In New York, Horace organized the house of Bulkley and Claflin.^[3]

Horace moved his family to New York, residing at 124 Columbia Heights in Brooklyn.^{[3][9][10][11]} Around 1856, Horace sold the property to Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887).^[12][13][14]

Horace and his family remained in Brooklyn, until sometime prior to his death.^[15][16][17]

Horace passed away in 1885.^{[3][8][18][19]}
