Donald was born in 1913. He is the son of John Chrystall and Annie Broadbelt.
Donald was brought up in Foxton and was farming with his parents when the 2nd World War broke out. He enlisted on 17 September 1941 and served as a Sergeant with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, 15 Squadron. His brothers Colin and Bernard also enlisted.
Sadly Donald was killed while undertaking Formation Practice on 7 November 1942. He was 29 years of age.
